Age of Wonders: Planetfall is the latest in the longrunning Age of Wonders series of 4X strategy games. Developed by Triumph Studios and published by strategy stalwarts Paradox Interactive, it takes the Age of Wonders series in an entirely new direction, blasting off into a futuristic sci fi setting.

With a new setting, a new planet to explore, and new factions to become or fight against, Age of Wonders: Planetfall is one of the most exciting strategy games of 2019. Here’s the key details:

What’s a 4X?

4X’s are a type of strategy game that go back all the way to the original Master of Orion game. Despite them being named 4X games, the Xs stand for eXplore, eXpand, eXploit and eXterminate. Typically in a 4X you’ll take on the role of a leader of a faction, with the goal being subjugation of the entire map, be it through military means or more diplomatic or culture focused victories.

The Setting

Previous games in the Age of Wonders series have been set in fantasy worlds, filled with magic and exotic creatures from mythology or the series developers imaginations. They’ve always made sure that Age of Wonders is a series that’s set apart from other games in the 4X genre.

Age of Wonders: Planetfall, however, has gone to space. Set after the tumultuous dissolution of the intergalactic Star Union, a human government ruling over myriad systems, the action picks up when you take control of a faction and begin to unravel the mystery behind the Star Union’s destruction, as you carve out a new future for humanity.

Each faction has a unique method of play and unique units, characters, and more. You’ll also create your own individual leader for your faction with whom you can roam the planet, taking part in battles, and expanding your presence from the front line.
